Opening Buring in Ohio: What you need to know
The Stonelick Township Fire Department reminds all residents that open burning in Ohio is regulated by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to protect public health, safety, and the environment. It is important to understand what types of open burning are permitted and when burning is prohibited.
What is considered open burning?
Open burning refers to any outdoor fire where smoke is released directly into the air without passing through a chimney or stack. This includes burning brush, leaves, trash, grass, or other materials in a pile, barrel, or open area. (Ohio Administrative Code, Chapter 3745-19-01(H))
Restrictions on Open Burning
-
Ohio law prohibits open burning within city limits or in areas with a population over 1,000 without proper authorization.
-
Statewide, open burning is strictly prohibited during the months of March, April, May, October, and November between the hours of 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM. This restriction is in place due to increased fire risk during these months.
-
It is illegal to burn garbage, rubber, plastics, asphalt, and other hazardous materials at any time.
-
Fires must be kept away from structures, wooded areas, and fields, and must be attended at all times with a water source nearby. (Ohio Administrative Code, Open Burning Standard)
Permit Burning
-
Small, controlled campfires, cooking fires, and ceremonial fires are generally allowed, provided they are safely managed and do not create a nuisance.
